How to check if AI recommends your brand
By Łukasz Starosta · Updated November 2, 2026 · 5 min read
The short answer
Ask AI assistants the questions your buyers ask, on each engine you care about, and read every answer. Note whether it recommends your brand, only mentions it, or leaves it out. Then repeat, because the same question can get a different answer next time.
Recommended and Mentioned are different results
An answer can name your brand in a list and still tell the buyer to pick someone else. Counting mentions alone makes that look like a win.
So sort each answer into one of three results: it recommends you, it only mentions you, or it leaves you out. Being left out and being mentioned without a recommendation need different fixes.
PromptScout shows this for each answer to a tracked question: Brand mentioned or Brand not mentioned, plus Brand recommended when the answer recommends you. The answer detail shows Recommended, Not recommended or Not classified. Not classified means the answer has no label, for example a run from before labels existed.
Real example: an answer that recommends
This answer comes from PromptScout's own monitoring. Each tool is listed with a reason to pick it, so the classifier labelled all three Recommended. A tool named only as one example among others would count as Mentioned.

Why one check is not enough
AI answers change. In PromptScout's own monitoring, 17.3% of back-to-back runs of the same question on the same engine flipped between mentioning the brand and not. That is from 5,436 answers collected May 28 – August 25, 2026. On Google AI Overviews it was 26.0%.
So one answer is a sample, not a verdict. Ask the same questions again over several weeks before you decide AI leaves you out.

How to check by hand
You can do this yourself in an afternoon. Keep it the same each time so the results compare.
- Write down 5 to 10 questions a buyer would ask before they choose a product like yours.
- Ask each one on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, in a fresh chat or a private window.
- For each answer, write down: recommended, only mentioned, or left out.
- Note which competitors the answer recommends and which pages it links to.
- Repeat with the same questions in two weeks and compare.

What to record for each answer
- The question, word for word.
- The engine and the date.
- Recommended, only mentioned, or left out.
- The competitors it recommends.
- The pages it cites.
Common questions
- How can I see if AI search engines mention my brand or website?
- Ask the questions your buyers ask on each engine and look for your brand name and links to your site in every answer. Ask more than once, because answers change between runs.
- How do I know if my brand is left out of AI recommendations?
- If answers to your buyers' questions recommend competitors and only mention you, or skip you, you are left out for those questions. Check each engine and several runs before you decide. In PromptScout, the Competitors page counts answers that cited or mentioned you but recommended a competitor.
- How do I track brand mentions in AI search over time?
- Ask the same questions on a schedule and record the result each time. PromptScout's paid plans do this on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Bing Copilot.
- Can I check for free?
- Yes. One free check: 3 questions on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Start at /get-started.
