ChatGPT Gemini AI Overviews Perplexity
Choose an artificial intelligence (AI) visibility tool by the work you need to do: check brand mentions, compare competitors, inspect sources, or improve a page. A useful tool connects its report to saved answers and pages your team can review. Judge that connection before relying on its score.
Summary
Generative engine optimization (GEO) means improving how a brand and its content appear in AI answers. The work spans several jobs, so a feature list rarely settles which tool to choose. Start with a question from your current workload: whether a product description is wrong, a competitor appears more often, or a useful page is missing from citations. Ask the vendor to show the records needed to investigate it.
Evaluate the result as a team would use it. A marketer needs to understand the gap, a writer needs a supported edit, and an analyst needs a comparison they can repeat. A score helps direct attention, but the saved answer, source page, and measurement rules determine whether anyone can act on it. Choose the tool that completes that path for your use case.
Monitoring
Open an answer behind a reported brand mention. Check that it names the right company and whether it recommends the product, describes it, or lists it in passing. Those outcomes may all count as presence, but they mean different things for a buyer. Keep the original wording available so a reviewer can check the classification without relying on a short generated description of the answer.

Inspect missing results with the same care. A failed request cannot establish brand absence. Record the provider, time, product surface, and available settings, including whether collection used a browser or an application programming interface (API). These methods may return different answers. The tool should let you compare consistent records and show where collection gaps reduce coverage, rather than folding every missing result into a weaker brand score.
Comparing Tools
Ahrefs Brand Radar offers an existing index of AI responses as well as custom prompt tracking. Those support different questions: exploring where a brand already appears in the index, and following a question set you choose. When reviewing a result, establish which source it uses before treating it as evidence about your own buyer questions.
Profound Answer Engine Insights describes custom prompts, citation analysis, and competitor reporting, with browser-based answer collection. Compare these documented features against the same task you give another tool. Ask to inspect the prompt, answer, citation, and counting rule. Feature overlap doesn't establish equivalent data, and this comparison is not a test of either product's accuracy. Your evaluation should show which records each product supplies for the decision at hand.
Competitor Scores
Ask which questions and brands enter a competitor score. Keep questions that name your brand separate from questions that ask for solutions without naming vendors. Adding branded questions can raise observed presence without showing any change in unprompted discovery. Keep the competitor roster fixed too, or record the change clearly when a newly added product affects the comparison.
“The share of answers mentioning us” differs from “our share of all brand mentions.” The latter may count repeated names within an answer. Check the denominator, treatment of missing answers, and weighting of question groups before using either measure in a client report. The competitor guide explains how to keep these choices consistent across reports.
Sources
A citation appears with an answer. A search candidate appears in the returned source list but may never become a citation. Our Reddit study shows why that distinction matters: Reddit's share of visible ChatGPT citations fell from 13.05% to 0.45%, while its share of search candidates rose from 26.84% to 30.08%. A citation-only view would miss its continued presence among candidates.

The chart uses a separate total for each source type. It does not show whether the model read, trusted, or used a page. Ask the tool which layer it records, then open the page to check its relevance and accuracy. A useful source report should help you distinguish an outdated product description, a relevant comparison, and an unrelated link before assigning content work.

Content and GEO
For Google, search engine optimization (SEO) basics still apply to AI features. Google's guidance says supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet; it does not require special AI markup. Treat access, clear content, and accurate claims as checks before commissioning new material. That guidance applies to Google's features, not as a promise about every answer engine.
A content recommendation should name the page, missing answer, and proposed edit. “Explain how appointment reminders work on the booking page” gives a writer a task; “improve authority” does not. Check existing pages first, support factual additions with sources, and make tradeoffs clear enough for a buyer to use. After publication, compare the same questions and keep observed answer changes separate from claims about what caused them.
Evaluation Checklist
Give each candidate tool the same task: verify a mention, explain a score, trace a citation, and review a proposed edit. Ask a colleague to complete it using the records provided. Note where they need missing context or manual work. That is a more useful basis for selection than counting dashboards, because it shows whether the tool fits the team's reporting and editing process.
Using PromptScout
In PromptScout, maintain questions in Prompts, inspect results in Monitoring, and review Competitors and Sources. Keep proposed edits and their reasons in your worksheet. After an approved change, revisit the same questions. Record brand presence, displayed citations, and visits separately so the report shows what changed without treating different outcomes as a single measure.
Notes on the data
The chart covers ChatGPT responses from July 18–August 7 and August 14–17, 2026, in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The earlier window contains 184 successful responses and 1,119 visible citation URLs, including 146 Reddit URLs. The later window contains 72 responses and 222 visible citation URLs, including 1 Reddit URL. Reddit matches include reddit.com, its subdomains, and redd.it.
The returned search lists contain 4,810 candidate URLs in the earlier window, including 1,291 Reddit URLs, and 1,589 in the later window, including 478 Reddit URLs. URLs were normalized and deduplicated within each response. Each percentage divides Reddit URLs by all URLs of the same type in that window. The question sets and model mixes differ, and the sample is topic-skewed. These results describe the recorded windows; they do not establish a cause or represent all ChatGPT use.
